Today, the constant pinging of your e-mail can be like the drip-drip-drip of water torture. We're swimming in doodads and options and text messaging and search engines, Blackberries and blogs, Wi-fi, cell phones that try to do all of the above, and the promise that we haven't seen anything yet.

this is my manifesto for me combat this digital distraction and overload--which has left me fragmented and uneffective.

pls feel free to add things that may help.

1. only surf the web for pleasure from the hours of 6-9pm
2. only turn on AIM/Instant messanger/chat from 4pm on.
3. only check email every 2hrs (not every 10min like most mail clients are set to check)
4. only answer the phone after 12noon.
5. ...?

Notes
1. on web surfing: i can surf the web at anytime for info only if its applicable to the task at hand.
2. On chat: AIM/Chat can be turned on any time if working with a client and or collaborating with a friend on music (for example.)
3. on email: Email maybe checked as often as needed, if the task requires information from this source.
4. on phone: ack.. i dunno.. the phone.. rings alot.. maybe this should be a good rule no matter.
5. ...?

just some thoughts and guidelines to help me focus.

good post: another item - computer shouldnt be turned on out of habit, turn it on if you have a definable reason for doing so (the reason might still be to browse and check out whats new on interweb today, though.. just be aware of what yr doing)

Our brains weren't designed for all this info; reducing the number of inputs is a good idea.

It's also not a bad idea to take a walk every day -- or do something involving quiet time.

24th of april.

no complaints on my technology dependancy, though, I got rid of the phone at my house and stopped watching more than 30 mins a day of TV (dvd's don't count because I run them while working).

Actually, our brains filter out most of the input we get. There's tons of visual and auditory information we don't register, and a bunch of very complex information that is processed and simplified: take for instance stereo information. How many sound waves are you receiving right now? Tons, and they are all added together in the air before they reach our 2 ears. Your brain then seperates just one of those sounds, and subtracts the signal from one ear from the other to determine differences in phase. Ditto for frequency damping. This information is then combined and we perceive it as 3D panning.

I love the analogy I once heard about a bug in a pool. This bug can tell when and where people have jumped into the pool, how big they are and the dimensions of the pool, based soley on the frequency pattern at which he/she bobs up and down on the waves.
